An Analysis of the Education Issue in the Novels of Mükerrem Kamil Su

Mükerrem Kâmil Su is among the first generation of women writers of the Republic. Although the artist wrote popular novels, her identity as a teacher was also reflected in her works. For this reason, it is of great importance to evaluate the novels in question in terms of the educational elements they contain. The artist has twenty-one novels for adults. These novels were published between 1934-74. The author's novels have not been examined in detail within the framework of education. Because popular literature research is quite limited in the field of New Turkish Literature. The characters in the novels are teachers, doctors and lawyers. Although there are also characters who work in a government office or are businessmen, the majority of the novel characters are primarily teachers, then doctors and lawyers. Female teachers are mostly idealistic characters. They always want to work in Anatolia. However, they can never find peace in these towns and villages and have to struggle with the bigotry and immorality of these places. Finally, they return to their hometown, the big city. The female teachers in the novels bear traces from Mükerrem Kâmil Su's life. Writing books after retiring from teaching or while they were still teaching, and the fact that the triangle of Balıkesir, Ankara and Istanbul constitute the main locations in the novels are just a few of these traces. When her novels are read and examined in chronological order, her success in reflecting the perception of family and women and the understanding of education of her time is remarkable. In addition, the artist tried to fill the "modern woman" perception that emerged in the years when women began to appear in the public sphere; she created characters who worked in the public sphere but maintained the traditional female role within the family.
