Values Alignment Strategies of a Gifted Student in Mathematics Classes for Inclusive Education

The purpose of this research is to determine the values alignment strategies of a gifted student in the mathematics classroom where inclusive practices take place. The participant of the research, which was designed in a holistic single case pattern, is a gifted student continuing her education in a school where inclusive practices are implemented. The participant, determined on a voluntary basis through the purposeful sampling method, is a 7th grade student. The data were collected through classroom video recordings and video analysis-based interviews and analyzed using the content analysis method. In the video analysis, the participant was prioritized, the harmony and conflict processes of the teacher and students were determined as critical situations, and the participant was asked about the reasons for their decisions. Adoption, manipulation, self-focus, and peer-support have been identified as values alignment strategies. Adoption and manipulation were obtained as strategies in which the gifted student focused on teacher values, self-focus as a strategy in which she focused on her individual values, and peer-support as a strategy in which she focused on the values of her peers who were not diagnosed as gifted. Identifying the values alignment strategies of the gifted student’s peers who are not diagnosed with giftedness can provide clues for designing inclusion practices at the centre of values. Students’ criteria for implementing values alignment strategies at two extremes, such as direct acceptance of teacher values or focus on individual values, can be studied.
