Su, çok çeşitli maddeleri çözme, askıda tutma ve ayırma konusundaki olağanüstü kapasitesi nedeniyle sıklıkla evrensel çözücü olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Moleküler düzeydeki çok yönlülüğü, suyu yaşamın sürdürülmesi ve kimyasallar ile besin maddelerinin karasal, atmosferik ve biyolojik sistemler boyunca taşınması için vazgeçilmez kılmaktadır. Su yaşamı destekleyen bir ortam olarak kritik önem taşırken, küresel koruma çabaları tatlı su kaynaklarının sürekliliğini güvence altına almak için yenilikçi ve giderek daha gelişmiş yaklaşımları gerekli kılmaktadır. Bu çalışma, suyun temel özelliklerini incelemekte, tatlı su talebini etkileyen sosyo-kültürel unsurları analiz etmekte ve su korumasını güçlendirmek amacıyla geliştirilen bilimsel ve teknolojik yenilikleri ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışma, su odaklı içeriklerin fen, teknoloji, mühendislik ve matematik (STEM) alanları arasında disiplinlerarası ve disiplinlerüstü öğretim ve öğrenme için zengin bir temel oluşturabileceğine ilişkin önemli çıkarımlar sunmaktadır. Erken çocukluktan yükseköğretime kadar tüm eğitim kademelerinde uygulanabilecek akuaponik, kentsel tarım ve yağmur suyu hasadı gibi müfredat örnekleri sunulmaktadır. Çalışma, sürdürülebilir su yönetimini desteklemeye ve güçlü STEM programlarının geliştirilmesine rehberlik edecek öneriler ile sonlandırılmaktadır.
